In 2022, we are celebrating 35 years of international development!
We salute all elected officials, staff, technical experts and others from our member municipalities who contributed to making FCM's peer-to-peer approach such a success. Your dedication to collaboration continues to fuel our ongoing initiatives.
Welcome to municipal engagement on a global scale. Since 1987, our international programming has helped Canadian municipal elected officials and staff share knowledge and build relationships with their counterparts in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
Our peer-to-peer approach helps global partners learn how to foster lasting economic development, empower local governments and encourage civic participation. The end goals are more accountable local governments, stronger local economies and increased environmental sustainability.

Global Affairs Canada funds these initiatives, which give Canada's local elected officials and municipal staff opportunities to hone intercultural communication and project management skills while forging lasting business ties. These programs also help Canada contribute to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, a worldwide call to end poverty, protect our environment and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
For international programs that are now closed, see our Past International Programs page.
Every year, to recognize the outstanding contributions of our members who take part in these programs and initiatives, we give out International Awards in three categories. For more information about these awards and to see past winners.
