Today the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) launched a campaign asking Canadians to showcase their hometown pride. FCM believes that the next federal election must focus on strengthening Canada through developing our cities and communities. The Hometown Proud Campaign is the start of a conversation about how we build the Canada of tomorrow.

"We have one message for our federal counterparts this week, a strong Canada starts with strong hometowns. Our cities and communities are the engines that drive our country forward, creating local jobs and local growth and fostering our quality of life."

FCM President Brad Woodside issued the following statement regarding the announcement: "FCM welcomes today's announcement by Minister Raitt of additional safety measures that respond directly to recommendations made by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

The partnership is part of the First Nation - Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), a joint initiative of FCM and Cando (the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers) that enhances the capacity of First Nations and adjacent municipalities to engage in joint community economic development planning and projects.

The events of this week were tragic, as we bore witness to appalling violence against Canadian soldiers both in Ottawa and in Saint-Jean-sur- Richelieu. On behalf of all municipal leaders, I offer my most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

More housing options which are affordable to Canadians are needed to help grow local economies, attract new workers and meet the needs of vulnerable Canadians, stated the members of the National Forum on Housing and the Economy at the launch of the Forum today.
