OTTAWA - The following statement was released today by Claude Dauphin, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), following the tabling of a motion on housing by Mike Sullivan, NDP MP for York South-Weston:

"FCM supports the NDP's continued focus on fixing Canada's Housing Crunch.

The motion moved today looks to ease the burden by immediately renewing long-term social housing funding and reinvesting in the development of affordable housing units. It also reinforces the role of municipalities as a key stakeholder in the process.

To address this national challenge, we need a partnership to truly fix Canada's housing crunch. When all orders of government work together, we can achieve real, positive change.

The lack of adequate and affordable housing is one of the biggest issues facing Canadians across the country and is a threat to the social and economic growth of Canadian municipalities. FCM welcomes the opportunity to bring attention to the crisis playing out across the entire housing spectrum and the need for all orders of government to play a role in addressing it."
