Statement from FCM President Raymond Louie on Liberal Party plans to invest in wastewater system upgrades and climate-resilient infrastructure

"The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is pleased that the Liberal Party of Canada has pledged to invest significant resources in green infrastructure. Improving the resiliency of our infrastructure will reduce the risk from climate change for Canadians. Upgrading wastewater systems to meet existing federal regulations will address the largest source of water pollution. Canadian municipalities are well positioned to be leaders in implementing clean technologies and in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency retrofits. It will be important to ensure that green infrastructure investment is dedicated to municipal priorities, including the implementation of wastewater regulations, to build a more environmentally sustainable Canada. Today's announcement has the potential to respond directly to our calls to action."

FCM's Roadmap for Strong Cities and Communities, and companion Action Plan for a Rural Canada, lay out practical solutions for environmental sustainability.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of municipal government. In leading the municipal movement, FCM works to align federal and local priorities, recognizing that strong hometowns make for a strong Canada.
