My name is Mairin Loewen, and I am a City Councillor in Saskatoon. I am seeking re-election to the FCM Board as a representative of the larger municipalities in Saskatchewan, and I’m asking for your support at the 2023 AGM.
I have served as a City Councillor for Ward 7 in Saskatoon since 2011. I grew up in Saskatoon and attended school here before moving to Ottawa where I earned a B.A. in Political Science (Carleton University), and later an M.A. in Political Studies (University of Saskatchewan). I have built my career in public service and it has been an honour to serve Ward 7 residents over the last 12 years.
I have been active within FCM since 2015, and have been a member of the Standing Committees on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development, International Relations, Increasing Women’s Participation in Municipal Government, and Municipal Infrastructure and Transportation Policy. I am currently serving as chair of the Municipal Finance and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, and I have also been one of FCM’s appointees to the management board of the National Zero Waste Council since 2017.
I believe FCM provides tremendous value to Canada’s municipalities. During a time where our communities face increasing complexities related to housing, climate, mental health and addictions, infrastructure, and fiscal pressures, FCM is evolving to meet those needs. As a board member I will continue my focus on ensuring effective advocacy, organizational sustainability, service, and support to communities across Canada. I am committed to a collaborative approach which focuses on and amplifies the points of unity across our diverse communities.
Through our Council’s leadership model, I co-lead the Environmental Sustainability portfolio providing strategic feedback and continuity on this evolving and important file. I have served on all of Council’s Standing Policy Committees and serve on multiple controlled corporations boards in addition to appointments to advisory committees as Council’s liaison.
Outside of my Council work, I am a co-founder and volunteer organizer with Girls Rock Saskatoon. In my spare time I enjoy playing music and sports as well as spending time with my partner and son.
