Municipalities from across Canada donate books to the Wood Buffalo Regional Library thanks to FCM’s Canada by the Books Initiative (15/09/2017)

The President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Jenny Gerbasi was pleased to donate books from communities across Canada to the Wood Buffalo Regional Library. The donation is part of FCM's Canada by the Book initiative aimed at promoting children's literacy.

For Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation, FCM donated 150 children's books. All of the books given to the library were provided by municipal leaders who are in Wood Buffalo Region this week for FCM's September Board of Directors meeting. Each Board member was asked to bring along one book by a local author that showcases some aspect of his or her community.

"This initiative is the opportunity for Wood Buffalo residents to read and get to know the work of Canadian authors from across the country," said Jenny Gerbasi, FCM President and Winnipeg Deputy Mayor. "Through Canada by the Book, FCM has handed out hundreds of books by local authors to school and public libraries in communities across Canada."

"I want to thank FCM's Board members for their dedication to this program and for spreading the joy of literature across the nation," added Gerbasi. "I'm honoured to be able to take part in this initiative and to donate these books to Wood Buffalo Regional library."

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is the national voice of local government, with nearly 2,000 members representing more than 90 per cent of the Canadian population.
