Statement by FCM President Raymond Louie following an address by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to FCM's 2016 Annual Conference in Winnipeg (05/06/2016)
As President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), I want to thank the Leader of the Green Party of Canada, Elizabeth May, for addressing the 1,600 mayors and municipal councillors attending this year's FCM Annual Conference in Winnipeg.
Ms. May has been a dedicated champion of the municipal sector for many years, and has been a strong advocate for the integral role that our cities and communities play in creating a more sustainable future. As the order of government on the front lines of the fight against climate change, municipalities are leading the way, and as such we and the Green Party share many of the same goals.
Canada is committed to achieving the ambitious greenhouse-gas emission reduction targets set out during the COP21 climate conference in Paris last year. FCM and its member municipalities are working with our federal partners to achieve the objectives of that Agreement. Elizabeth May and the Green Party of Canada will be vital contributors to those efforts, and I welcome her strong and enthusiastic voice.
