Municipalities from across Canada gather in Winnipeg for FCM’s Annual Conference (01/06/2016)

Ottawa — More than 1,500 mayors, councillors, and other municipal representatives from coast to coast to coast will gather in Winnipeg from June 3-5 for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) Annual Conference.

Under the theme "Municipalities, the Heart of Canada," the meeting will focus on the central role played by municipalities in building great communities and a prosperous nation.

The conference will shine a spotlight on the strong municipal-federal partnership fostered by FCM and its members, and a shared commitment to delivering results for Canadians. Delegates will hear from and speak with key federal ministers and party leaders throughout the three-day conference, beginning with a keynote address by the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. Other speakers will include Dianne Watts, representing the Conservative Party of Canada, New Democratic Party Leader Tom Mulcair, and Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party of Canada.

FCM's Annual Conference will kick-start federal-municipal consultations on Phase 2 of Ottawa's 10-year investment plan as outlined in Budget 2016. These consultations will be crucial to ensuring the next phase of funding delivers results for municipalities and for all residents of our cities and communities. In addition, municipal leadership in adapting to and fighting climate change, and in creating sustainable communities, will form part of the agenda in Winnipeg.

Canada's municipal sector will also pay tribute to the people of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray) in Alberta following the wildfires that recently devastated their community, driving so many from their homes but inspiring countless acts of generosity as strangers and neighbours alike helped each other cope.

On Sunday, June 5, FCM will hold elections for a new President and Board of Directors. These municipal leaders from across Canada will play a crucial, frontlines role in the year ahead as FCM continues to build the solid municipal-federal relationship necessary to bolster the economy, develop great communities, and make life better for all Canadians.
