The following statement was issued by Joanne Vanderheyden, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) on the ongoing wildfires in the British Columbia Interior.

“On behalf of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and our more than 2,000 members across the country, I want to express heartfelt support to our colleagues and British Columbians as they deal with ongoing devastating wildfires. We stand with you in your time of need.

“For weeks, Canadians from coast to coast to coast have been gripped by the dramatic images emerging from communities across the province. We can only imagine what you are dealing with on the ground; the devastation these wildfires have caused is tragic and stories of our fellow British Columbians being forced from their homes have touched us all. We lend our support and solidarity with all of you as you contend with this terrible crisis.

“As the situation continues to evolve families, friends and businesses are suffering tremendous hardships and local leadership continues to be crucial to keeping people safe. I want to thank municipal leaders and first responders on the ground who are tackling the fires, safely evacuating citizens, and setting up temporary shelters. Their bravery and dedication to serve our communities make us all proud.

“The municipal sector is banding together to express support and offer help. In the spirit of true partnership, we are calling on the federal and provincial orders of government to continue the critical support needed to assist local government to meet the urgent needs of their communities at this time.”

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of local government, with 2,000 members representing more than 90 per cent of Canada’s population.
