Turning waste into opportunity: Advancing municipal organic waste-to-energy projects

10:15–10:45 a.m.
Municipalities manage landfills, wastewater treatment facilities and organic waste systems—assets that can generate local, low-carbon energy. But how do municipalities secure funding to move these projects forward? This session addresses top questions from funding recipients and explores how landfill gas, biosolids and food waste can be converted into biogas for heat, electricity or renewable natural gas. Learn how funding from the Green Municipal Fund reduces risk and supports energy analysis, technology choices and financial planning, along with key considerations for collection systems, partnerships and getting started.

Advancing Climate Adaptation: Funding Opportunities through LLCA

11 a.m.–12 p.m.
Discover the Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation (LLCA) initiative and its key funding streams, including Climate-Ready Plans and Processes (CRPP), Adaptation in Action (AiA), and Rapid Adaptation Projects (RAP), delivered through the Green Municipal Fund. With over $530 million in funding to support more than 1,400 activities by 2031, LLCA enables communities to plan, pilot, and implement climate adaptation solutions that strengthen community resilience. Through selected case studies, the session will illustrate how communities are advancing adaptation efforts while realizing significant long-term benefits. It will also outline the application process and key considerations for communities seeking to access funding.

Climate budgeting as a tool to reach net-zero

1–1:30 p.m.
Learn how climate budgeting helps municipalities translate net zero targets into concrete actions by embedding climate priorities into planning and budget decisions. This session highlights practical approaches emerging from the municipal Net Zero Action Research Partnership (N ZAP) and key considerations for getting started.

Lower fuel and maintenance costs, more predictable budgets and long-term savings are leading municipalities to electrify their fleets. But how do municipalities get started and secure funding? This session tackles top questions from funding recipients, covering practical steps from planning and feasibility to implementation. Learn how the Green Municipal Fund can help reduce risk, support funding applications and address challenges, including for specialty vehicles like fire trucks and waste collection.

Regional Energy Coach program: Local support for energy efficient affordable housing (R)

3–3:30 p.m.
Learn how GMF’s Regional Energy Coach (REC) program provides local hands-on on support to help affordable housing providers plan energy efficient retrofits and new builds. This short presentation highlights how municipalities can leverage the program to advance energy performance in housing, reduce costs, and improve outcomes for residents—while sharing the opportunity with housing providers and networks in their communities.
