2010 FCM Sustainable Communities Awards Winner — Buildings – City of Campbell River: Overview

City of Campbell River, British Columbia

Green Roof Retrofit for City Hall

In May 2009, the City of Campbell River became the first municipality in B.C. to install a green roof on an existing civic building. The roof is designed to be self-sustaining, requires little maintenance, and is expected to double the lifespan of the roof by protecting it from UV radiation, temperature variations and physical damage. The rooftop vegetation consists of native, drought tolerant species that require minimal watering and maintenance, and that were chosen for their proven ability to reduce energy costs and GHG emissions.
