Women in Local Government

Head Start for Young Women Program

Head Start for Young Women

Women are underrepresented in local government in Canada. Yet, even among women there are differences in the barriers that may be experienced when participating in local government. Age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, ability, race and many other factors will impact the experience that any one woman may have when engaging with the formal political process.

Head Start for Young Women responds to the intersecting barriers experienced by young women when it comes to participation in local government.

Acknowledging that young women are the experts of their own realities, this program aims to support young women and municipal councillors to work together to create more space for young women in local government. Launched in September 2013, the program will run until December 2014. Head Start for Young Women is made possible by the generous support of Status of Women Canada.

Six communities from across the nation are participating in FCM's Head Start for Young Women program! This year, expect great things from: Grand Forks, BC; London, ON; Ottawa, ON; Gatineau, QC; Bathurst, NB; and Rigolet, NL.
