Building Inclusive and Green Municipalities
About the project
Despite sustained economic growth, inequality remains an important challenge in South Africa. Municipalities in this country are working hard to build sustainable infrastructure and generate inclusive growth.
The Building Inclusive and Green Municipalities initiative is implemented in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). It aims to bolster SALGA's ongoing efforts to stimulate local economies and modernize infrastructure.
Activities will focus on the Eastern Cape Province, which suffers from some of the highest poverty indicators in South Africa, and will place a particular emphasis on vulnerable segments of society, including women and youth.
Building Inclusive and Green Municipalities is a five year, $5.8M initiative. Funding includes a $4.9 million contribution from Global Affairs Canada as well as in-kind contributions from Canadian and South African municipalities.
Building Inclusive and Green Municipalities' focus:
- Improve the capacity of South African municipal governments to support effective service delivery, inclusive local green economic growth and enhanced climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
- Empower women, youth and vulnerable groups, and ensure their inclusion in the political, economic and social life of their community.
- Reduce poverty and improve climate change mitigation in targeted municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province.
