Get involved

FCM International offers opportunities for municipalities, municipal associations and individual municipal practitioners to engage internationally through programs funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). FCM manages municipal development programs in selected countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Types of participation

Municipalities, municipal associations, elected officials, and municipal staff, can participate as volunteers in FCM's international work in the following ways:

• Engage as a Municipality: One lead coordinator and 2-4 municipal practitioners participate in the design and management of a project.
• Engage as an Individual: Individual municipal experts are sourced for specific partner needs.
• Engage as a Host for Study Tours: Municipalities share best practices by hosting delegations from overseas.

• Build Reputation: Expand the reputation of your municipality by using your experience to assist other countries in the development of effective and sustainable local services.
• Facilitate Trade Linkages: Broaden opportunities and create linkages for your community, businesses and institutions at a global level.
• Provide Opportunities: Offer skills development to increase capacity of staff to work in difficult circumstances, build interpersonal communication, and project management skills.
• Access Municipal Networks: Participate in Canadian communities of practice and connect to global municipal networks.
• Foster community engagement: Build social cohesion in your community by developing friendships, increasing cultural understanding, and instilling a sense of community pride.

Cost of participation

• FCM International covers the costs of participant travel, accommodation, meals and other project related expenses through funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
• Municipalities are asked to donate the time of their experts through salary contribution while they are on mission. Assignments will typically involve 2-3 technical missions per year.
