Statement by FCM President following speech by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May at today's FCM luncheon (21/11/2012)
OTTAWA, ON - The following statement was released today by FCM president Karen Leibovici following Green Party Leader Elizabeth May's speech at FCM's Advocacy Days luncheon in Ottawa:
"Canada's municipal leaders were pleased to be joined by Ms. May at today's luncheon.
We welcome Ms. May's endorsement of FCM's proposal for the new federal long-term infrastructure plan, including $2.5 Billion in new federal funding to improve municipal roads, bridges and water systems and fight traffic gridlock.
As Ms. May noted, these long-term investments can and must protect our aging infrastructure from flooding, ice storms and other extreme weather events.
Ms. May highlighted the critical role local governments played in Canada's response to the global recession, and pointed out the need for further collaboration among governments to fix growing holes in the housing market.
She made it clear municipalities have an essential role in protecting Canada's environment and building a more sustainable future, but they do not have the resources to do it alone. All governments must work together to build a strong economy and a green future.
FCM looks forward to continuing to work with Ms. May, and MPs from all parties for the benefit of all Canadians.
Last week, FCM released its recommendations for a 20-year federal plan with predictable funding to fix Canada's crumbling infrastructure.
