The federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) is the core federal funding stream for communities of all sizes. Every year, it provides predictable, long-term funding for local governments—directly empowering them to deliver thousands of infrastructure projects in communities of all sizes.

FCM has worked with successive governments to create the GTF (2005), to make it permanent (2011), and to index it for two percent annual growth (starting 2014-15). We’ve shown that building on the direct relationship between federal and municipal governments builds better lives for Canadians.

In Budget 2019 and again in Budget 2021, we secured a doubling of the year's GTF transfers to municipalities. Putting more tools in local hands means more critical infrastructure projects can move forward now—from roads and bridges to water, waste, energy and transit systems.

Growing this year’s Gas Tax Fund recognizes that local governments know how to make the most of every dollar to build better communities. Permanently growing the fund would directly empower them to do even more—to build the country Canadians deserve.
