Webinar — Sustainability in Action: Land Use

Thursday, October 31, 2013

12:00–1:30 p.m. EDT

Session summary

FCM presents its newest GMF webinar series for 2013-2014 — Sustainability in Action, featuring four webinars on land use planning, performance tracking and measurement, infrastructure planning and water management. Each of the webinars will include:

  • an introduction to sustainability principles related to the webinar topic
  • an overview of select tools, resources and policies in use in Canadian municipalities
  • examples of innovative initiatives and promising practices
  • advance reading material and other resources
  • an interactive Q and A session

Municipalities across Canada strive to create more compact, walkable neighbourhoods — an important step toward building greener, healthier, and more efficient communities. However, moving away from land-intensive development can be difficult to achieve in practice. Sprawling development is still common throughout the country; a result of high consumer demand, land economics, utility pricing, and other circumstances.

This webinar features new research on how Canadian municipalities can reverse this trend and encourage more sustainable growth patterns. Tune in to find out about new policies, incentives and tools being developed to support sustainable growth objectives — and gain ideas for innovative land use in your community.
