Gender Equality Study Mission
May 31-July 10, 2011 (Halifax, Nova Scotia & Ottawa, Ontario)
From May 31 to June 10, 2011, a group of Ukrainian officials including city mayors, deputy mayors and local councilors made a study visit to Canada. The delegation represented the core team within the Association of Ukrainian Cities (AUC) that are the driving force being the creation of a gender equality standing committee within AUC. During the visit, the Ukrainian delegation took part in the 74th FCM Annual General Meetings (AGM) held on June 2-6, 2011 in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. Participation in the AGM and engagement with Canadian municipal officials from across the country allowed them to gain more knowledge about FCM policies, committee activities, strategies of media involvement, stakeholder engagement in the operation of municipalities, etc.
In addition to participation in the AGM, the delegation held a series of meetings with strategic leaders and representatives of non-government organizations in Halifax and Ottawa. Dialogue was facilitated with local authorities regarding Canadian best practices that allowed the participants to conclude that gender equality is a priority policy of Canada and the driving force of social progress, that women's political participation plays an important role in social activities as it ensures the presence of women's interest in all spheres of life, creates conditions for new areas of influence, which, in turn, promotes positive change in society ensuring that gender equality and increasing women's access to decision-making is given specific attention at all levels of the budgetary processes.
This exchange of experience and the gaining of new knowledge, which took place during the FCM AGM, will contribute to the revitalization of the AUC's Advisory Committee on Gender Equality, which in turn will provide for a more open policy, programs and services that take into account the needs of all groups of population.
