Town of Drayton Valley, Alberta
Community Sustainability Plan
To develop a plan with an integrated approach toward building a community with a stable economy, a reduced environmental footprint and improved social supports for the well-being of residents.
In 2009, the Town of Drayton Valley developed a Community Sustainability Plan that now guides all departmental operations. The plan sets one-, five-, 10-, and 25-year targets for sustainable development. It also fosters an integrated approach to planning for the entire community, bringing residents together to create a vision for the future.
- The town council approved the Community Sustainability Plan on December 16, 2009.
- In February 2010, a sustainability coordinator came on board to set baselines for energy efficiency and sustainable growth, facilitate implementation, and track progress.
- By late 2011, 86% of first-year targets and 64% of five-year targets were completed or in progress.
- Targets include a zero-emission public transit system and a 75% community waste diversion rate.
