2012 Energy - Co-winner 1

Rural Municipality of Ritchot, Manitoba

Île-des-Chênes Community Centre District Geothermal Project

Objective

To construct an energy-efficient, environmentally friendly community centre that serves the needs of residents from across the municipality.

Initiative

When the Town of Île-Des-Chênes sought to replace the ice plant in its hockey rink with a geothermal system, it discovered the costs were daunting. The solution? Team up with another project, design a bigger system and attract more funding. The result is Manitoba's first district geothermal heating and cooling system that connects the arena, fire hall and community centre.

Highlights

  • The community centre is anticipated to use 60% less energy, and energy costs for the arena are expected to be reduced by 40%.
  • Built to last at least 75 years, the centre is also designed to serve as a post-disaster facility.
  • The project has created new services, new jobs, and a social gathering place for surrounding communities.
  • The initiative is an outstanding accomplishment for a municipality of just over 5,000 residents.

This project received support from FCM's Green Municipal Fund.
