2012 Buildings

Town of Oakville, Ontario

Green Buildings and Initiatives

Objective

To be the "most liveable town in Canada" through an integrated approach to reducing the ecological footprint of existing municipal buildings while ensuring that new facilities meet cutting-edge standards.

Initiative

The new Oakville Transit facility and the Sixteen Mile Creek Sports Complex reflect an innovative town policy that requires new municipal buildings larger than 500 m2 to achieve LEED® Silver certification. The town has also developed a Sustainable Building Procedure and Sustainable Design Guidelines for retrofitting and maintaining all town facilities.

Highlights

  • Heat recovered from the rink refrigeration system services other areas of the centre.
  • Permeable paving at the transit facility reduces stormwater runoff by 50%.
  • More than 75% of construction waste was diverted from landfill.
  • Occupants enjoy day-lit, open-concept workspaces with low-VOC finishes.
