City of Vancouver, British Columbia
Greenest City Action Plan
To become the greenest city in the world by 2020 with a vision for a healthy, sustainable future by setting economic, GHG, waste, building, transportation, air, water and food targets.
Putting the plan in place involved thousands of hours of volunteer time and more than two years of consultation with citizens, sustainability thought leaders, city staff, non-profit organizations, business leaders and academics — 35,000 in all. Coordination across departments and organizations enables the city to achieve multiple targets with a single strategy.
- Adopted in July 2011, the plan has become the foundation for all other policy work.
- Reporting tools and other mechanisms support implementation and ensure community involvement.
- Eighty staff from seven departments developed the plan and work to implement its targets.
- More than 100 community groups participated in 10 external advisory committees.
This project received support from FCM's Green Municipal Fund.
