Years in municipal politics: 2001-2013
City/province where you're living now:  Edmonton, Alberta

After the end of my term as FCM president, I continued my work with city council helping to pass the finalized Arena agreement, commenced the development of the airport lands, and to lobby for more funding for our LRT from other levels of government. Most recently I ran for mayor for the City of Edmonton.

Years in municipal politics: 1986 - Present

I continue to serve as a director for the Regional District of Central Kootenay. I am currently working hard as a member of the Local Government Committee for the Columbia River Treaty. The treaty and its possible revisions are of massive importance to the residents of the Kootenays and any possible changes should reflect the wishes of the residents.

In my spare time I enjoy gardening, travel and hiking the Great Northern Trail.

I have served as mayor of the City of Summerside since 1985. I currently serve on three committees for FCM. I was also the national chair, economic development, in 2001; chair of the Atlantic Caucus; and chair of the Atlantic Mayors Congress in 2011. Presently I am a board member of the Summerside Regional Development Corporation. I am also a founding member of the Trans Canada Trail Board; Summerside is the official birth beplace of the Trans Canada Trail. I am involved with real estate, and am a landlord of apartment buildings. I am married to Gail, RN, and we have two children and eight grandchildren. Being elected FCM national president has been the most interesting point in my career.

Having been first elected to Guelph city council in 1991, I continue to serve the citizens of our community as a councillor. Additionally as a health care professional, I maintain the role of Director of Operations for Regional Services at Homewood Health Centre, a leader in the provision of treatment for mental health and addictions. I volunteer within my community and participate in numerous fundraising events, and keep active with fitness, outdoor adventures and travel. My proudest accomplishment has been raising two amazing children as a single parent, and I recently welcomed a granddaughter into our family.

I am the director of program development for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). In this role, I am accountable for designing processes for the screening of passengers, checkpoint ergonomics, developing training programs and tools for screening officers, negotiations with Transport Canada (TC), air carriers and representatives from airport authorities, and drafting standard operating procedures. When I arrived at CATSA in April 2006, I held the position of director in the office of the president and CEO, and later on, the position of director, TC/CATSA operations liaison.

After leaving public life, I did a bit of consulting work. I also have a fun job working part-time in sales at Lee Valley Tools, which I have found has reconnected me with a lot of folks I used to work with in past professions. I still keep in touch with many former FCM colleagues through Facebook and other media. There is life after politics, and it's all good.
