Garth Frizzell

My friends and colleagues,

This year at the FCM Annual Convention in Ottawa, you will be choosing a 3rd Vice President from British Columbia, and I am excited to put my name forward as a candidate. The election which will take place on Sunday June 4th, 2017.

Effective local government is critical to an effective country. I have devoted the last 9 years as Councillor in the City of Prince George, serving my urban and rural citizens, chairing our Finance and Audit Committee, developing policy, deciding on issues, and always balancing social, environmental, economic and administrative concerns.

Over the course of eight years as a board member for FCM I have always answered the call to serve. Over this time, I have served Chair of the Standing Committee on Finance and Intergovernmental Relations, Chair of the Governance Working Group, and Chair of the BC Caucus, the municipal energy task force, and many other positions.

I am currently vice-chair of International Relations at FCM. In my 8 years on the International Committee, I have been Governance Representative for two successful five-year, $20 Mn projects FCM undertook for the government of Canada.
I've been honoured to speak internationally on FCM's behalf, whether on:

  • the importance of Women in Local Government to the Caucus of Women Mayors of Colombia; or on
  • FCM's use of development aid and advocacy work at a UCLG meeting in Senegal; or on
  • the role of local governments in marginalized mining communities to a UNDP conference in Brazil.

I believe in the work of FCM, whether for urban or rural or remote communities, regardless of gender, language, ethnic background or location. FCM works for all of us. All communities have a voice and need to be listened to.

Your feedback, thoughts and ideas are always welcome and you can reach me by email at garth.frizzell@princegeorge.ca or by phone at 778-349-5322.

I look forward to seeing you in Ottawa.

Sincerely,
Garth Frizzell
