Dear FCM Colleague:
It is with great pleasure that I announce my candidacy for the position of Third Vice-President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. After careful reflection and consideration, my decision is based on a desire to pursue the challenges as Third Vice-President, contribute to FCM's Leadership Team and represent the organization to the very best of my ability. My proven track record is supported by my 11.5 years on Halifax Regional Council during which I was honoured to be Deputy Mayor for a term and my 3.5 years involvement with the FCM organization as a Board Member.
I have great respect for the work being done by this "national voice of municipal government since 1901". Since joining FCM, I have served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Social-Economic Development, Vice-Chair of the Environmental and Sustainable Development Committee, Chair-Atlantic Regional Caucus, FCM Executive, Standing Committee on International Relations, and Chair of the Sustainable Communities Judge's Panel.
FCM has realized many successes over the past several years, such as the signing of a five-year strategic partnership with the Federal government on international development, new Federal funding for Canadian Municipalities in regard to Public Transit, Housing and Waste Water, the success with highlighting that municipal concerns are federal concerns during the last Federal election, and The Stronger Together Toolkit resulting from the joint First Nations-municipal Community Economic Development Initiative(CEDI) to mention just a few. Our ongoing success however, is a journey and not a destination and there is much more work to be done.
I am fully committed to offering my time, energy and experience to ensure that together with FCM we achieve our goals municipally, nationally and internationally.
As Elder Willie Wilson, Rainy River First Nation, stated, "If we are going to take a journey together, let's get in the canoe and paddle in the same direction. The benefactors of what you have started here today are going to be your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren."
I look forward to your support as we plan together for not only today but for the future and fulfil our goals to better the lives of citizens locally, nationally and internationally now and for generations to come. On Sunday June 5th, there will be a vote for Third Vice-President of Federation of Canadian Municipalities. I respectfully ask for your support.
Councillor Bill Karsten — Candidate for Third Vice-President
