Canada´s true democratic deficit is this: women, who comprise about half of the population, make up just 23 per cent of municipal councils. FCM wants to help close this gender gap because Canada and its communities cannot afford to lose the insights and expertise of half our population.
Since 2005, FCM´s Standing Committee on Increasing Women´s Participation in Municipal Government has undertaken a number of initiatives, activities and programs to encourage women who are considering running for municipal office. Adopting strategies that are designed to increase women´s participation in municipal decision-making supports FCM´s mandate to improve the quality of life in all communities by promoting strong, effective and accountable municipal government.
